1     Ellen Ochoa fue la primera mujer hispana en volar por el espacio. Nació en California el 10 de mayo de 1958. Aunque nació en Los Ángeles, considera que La Mesa, California, es su hogar natal. Ellen tenía sólo once años cuando Neil Armstrong pisó la luna en 1969. Eso la hizo interesarse más en el espacio. Le gustaban la música, la matemática y la ciencia. Se convirtió en una excelente flautista en la escuela.
 
2     Ellen tenía dos hermanos y una hermana. Sus padres se divorciaron cuando ella iba a la escuela secundaria. Se graduó en la Escuela Secundaria Grossmont de La Mesa, California, en 1975.
 
3     En 1980 Ellen obtuvo una Licenciatura de Ciencia en Física en la Universidad Estatal de San Diego. Completó su maestría en ingeniería eléctrica en la Universidad de Stanford en 1981. Cuando Sally Ride se convirtió en la primera astronauta mujer en 1983, Ellen se inspiró para ser astronauta también. Obtuvo su doctorado en 1985.
