Un posto per Mabel

1     "Nonno," chiese Shane mentre guardava socchiudendo gli occhi, "cos'è quella massa scura che si sta muovendo in giardino?"
 
2     Il nonno prese il binocolo dal tavolino accanto alla sua sedia a dondolo. Lo portò all'altezza degli occhi e mise a fuoco le lenti. Sorrise.
 
3     "E' Mabel. E' una tartaruga terrapene dell'America del Nord. Circa ogni due anni, viene fuori dai boschi e costruisce il nido per le sue uova in giardino".
 
4     "Un nido?" chiese Shane. "Intendi un nido come lo costruirebbe un uccello?"
 
5     Il nonno scosse la testa. "Sarebbe ridicolo, non credi? Le tartarughe di terra come Mabel scavano delle buche nel terreno. Un anno scesi per vedere che lo costruiva".
 
6     "Non scappò?" chiese Shane, i suoi occhi sgranati.
 
7     "No, le tartarughe non ‘corrono' da nessuna parte. Aveva quasi finito di scavare il buco quando arrivai lì. Sono degli animali veramente sorprendenti. Scavano il buco usando le loro zampe posteriori e non guardano mai ciò che stanno facendo. Ad ogni modo, depose circa 10 uova quella volta. Sono molte per una tartaruga di terra. Poi, usò di nuovo le sue zampe posteriori per raschiare piccoli pezzi di foglie morte ed erba nel buco e poi lo riempì con della terra".
 
8     "Pensi che potremmo andare giù ed osservare Mabel proprio adesso?" chiese Shane.
