Un guasto per parlare

1     Leina si lisciava la gonna mentre stava seduta sul sedile anteriore dell'auto. Tirò la sua lunga treccia nera davanti alla spalla per tenerla in ordine. Guardò l'orologio nel cruscotto. Poi desiderò che l'auto si spostasse più velocemente.
 
2     IL Sig. Singh diede uno sguardo a sua figlia.
 
3     "Che cosa c'è che non va, Leina?" chiese. "Non siamo in ritardo. Dovremmo avere tempo in abbondanza per arrivare al banchetto padre-figlia".
 
4     "Lo so, penso di essere solo nervosa ed agitata. E' la prima volta che riesci a parteciparvi".
 
5     Il Sig. Singh annuì. "Mi dispiace che il mio lavoro mi tenga lontano da casa così tanto. Mi manca poter parlare con te".
 
6     Leina fece un cenno del capo. C'erano molte cose che voleva dire, ma non sapeva da dove cominciare. Non ci sarebbe in realtà stato tempo di parlare nemmeno al banchetto. Ci sarebbero state troppe persone attorno.
 
7     Aveva appena formulato poche parole di una domanda quando il motore dell'auto fece uno strano rumore. Trattenne il respiro. Eccolo di nuovo. Non appena il Sig. Singh ebbe portato l'auto sul bordo della strada il motore si fermò completamente. Procedettero a motore spento fino a fermarsi.
 
8     "Che c'è che non va, papà?" chiese.
