Like the Sun and Moon, Part 1
By Mary Lynn Bushong

Reina and Ronan were dropped off in front of their new school by the consular vehicle. They had had several days to get used to their father's new ambassadorial posting, but Reina wasn't even sure that years would be long enough.

"This school is so, so...alien," she muttered to her brother. "I mean, it's beautiful to look at, but..." her voice trailed off.

"Of course it's alien," chided her brother Ronan. "It's supposed to be alien. We're on another planet, light years from Earth." He paused. "Don't worry, just follow my lead. I make friends quickly."

They started up the steps of the building. Its architecture was different from anything the two had seen before. The buildings seemed to soar skyward in great arches of light. They knew it was a trick of the eye, since the building was substantial, but it made the school seem uplifting and ethereal.

The school administrator, Sata Ashai, met them at the top of the steps. Reina studied him as they approached. Corya has a lighter gravity than Earth, she thought. She knew the people were humanoid, but not that they were more elongated. Sata Ashai had to be at least two meters tall. His face and body were thin, and he wore a long white, purple-edged robe.

"Greetings," he said, bowing formally at the waist. "You are Reina Rogers, and you are Ronan Rogers." He addressed them one at a time. "I am Sata Ashai."

Their guide led them into the building. The ceiling was high like the nave in a church. From high above, Reina heard whispers of music. It was without melody, but still pleasant to hear. She looked up, expecting to see speakers or some other means of broadcasting.

     Sata Ashai noted her preoccupation.

"You are wondering about the music?" he asked.
