A Taste for Gold, Part 3
By Mary Lynn Bushong

Arion rushed to the door he had only just bolted. He hoped to raise the alarm and get help from the temple. No sooner had he pushed the door bolt back than it was shoved toward him, knocking him off balance.

He was jerked upward by the man who brought him the fruit, and a knife was put to his neck.

"I wouldn't move if I were you," the man growled in his ear. "The knife is sharp, and blood stains would not be attractive on that fine garment of yours."

The man turned to the others.

"Work quickly. Use those sledgehammers to knock a hole in the outside wall of the gold room. Fill your bags and drop them through the hole. The others should be almost there to pick them up."

"How about silver coins and jewels?" asked one of the thieves as they hurried to the gold room.

"No," said the temple man. "Saruk's taxes are only in gold. I may be a thief, but I take only what is due me."

The man pulled Arion toward the room. Another of the thieves opened the door first. He walked in and was dragged to the ceiling wrapped in a net.

"Fool," the temple man muttered under his breath. He ordered the trapped man cut loose while two others began striking the wall with their hammers. Methodically they filled the bags and had them ready to drop as soon as the hole was opened.
