Words from the Past, Part 2
By Mary Lynn Bushong

Caption: Picture of a World War One soldier wearing a medal to honor bravery for fighting in the Argonne in France.

Henry had ceased to think about the oppressive darkness of the basement while he thought about the long-hidden items of the trunk. He couldn't wait to get a good look at the medals and see what was in the box Mom carried.

They sat down at the kitchen table together and put their prizes down. Henry opened the first box and recognized it right away. It was a purple heart. Then he opened the other two but did not recognize them.

Henry pushed them over for his mother to see.

"Do you know what medals these are?" he asked.

Mom shook her head. "No, but this one might be French. The words appear to be in that language."

"Would you mind if I got online to research them?" he asked.

"I think that would be a great idea. Before you do, though, I would like you to see these."

Mom opened the box, revealing stacks of letters. Some were tied with ribbons, others with bits of string. Most were still in their envelopes; others were without them.
