Honoring the Dogs
By Mary Lynn Bushong

"Uncle Bart," called José, "where are you?"

"I am here in the work room," yelled Uncle Bart. "Come and see what I am working on."

José clomped down the stairs into the basement. The front of the house opened onto a hill top. The basement opened onto the backyard. It had big glass doors. It was very bright.

Uncle Bart was working at a scroll saw. It could cut shapes from wood. Uncle Bart was cutting a shape.

José knew not to get close. A moment later, Uncle Bart held up the wood he was cutting.

"What does this shape look like, José?" he asked.

"It looks like a dog," said José.

     Uncle Bart nodded.

"Do you know what kind of dog?"

José cocked his head and thought.
