Lenny Learns About Losing
By Joyce Furstenau

"I won!" cried Lenny. "Hooray! Hooray! I made it to level two!

I gathered all the jewels I need. Only four more levels to go through!"

Lenny was completely focused on the joystick in his hand.

He was up, then down, then up again. He had the game in his command.

He yelled at it. He screamed at it. He mumbled to himself.

"If you don't stop making so much noise," said Mom, "I'll put that thing back on the shelf!"

Lenny didn't hear his mom. He was starting level two.

His would surely find the secret. He was sure he could get through.

He mumbled, "Get ‘em! There it is!" and "Let's go! Now you're mine!"

He didn't hear the dog scratching. He didn't hear her whine.

Before long when his mom returned, she looked beside the kitchen door.

The dog had made a puddle right there upon the floor.

"Lenny!" she said. "Didn't you hear her? The poor dog wanted out!"
