The Northern Lights
By Mary Lynn Bushong

1     Long, long ago the northern sky was dark. Only the stars and moon shone at night.

2     One winter, food was hard to find. It was a starving time for the people of the North. The great caribou herds hid themselves. The seals could not be found.

3     One old couple saw their sons and their grandchildren getting hungrier. Their cheeks became thin. They stopped laughing and singing.

4     The old couple made up their minds. They would take lamps and go out on the ice. It would mean that more food would be saved for the others.
