Spring Surprise
By Mary Lynn Bushong

"What do you have in the bag, Dad?" asked Ted.

"I will not tell you," said Dad. "You will have to wait and see."

"How long must I wait?" asked Ted.

"You must wait until spring," said Dad.

"Spring!" said Ted with a frown. "It is fall now. Spring is a long time away."

"The time will go fast," said Dad. "Just wait and see."

Later on, Ted saw Dad outside. He was digging. He watched his dad.

It looked like he was holding rocks. He was taking small, brown rocks from the bag. Why was Dad planting rocks?

Ted waited for Dad to come inside. His dad put the bag in the trash.

"What were you planting, Dad?" asked Ted.

"I will not tell, Ted," said Dad. "You must wait for spring."

Ted frowned. "It looked like you were planting rocks."

"Did it?" asked Dad. "If they were, they must be magic." Dad ruffled Ted's hair. Then he walked away. Ted sighed. Half a year was a long time to wait.
