Bill Cosby Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom
By Sharon Fabian

1     Each year at a special ceremony, the president honors Americans who have gone above and beyond for their country. The occasion is the Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony held in the White House.

2     It was begun in 1945 by President Truman who wanted to honor special Americans for their service in World War II. President Kennedy revived the idea in 1963 and was the first president to award Presidential Medals of Freedom for peacetime efforts.

3     Presidential Medals of Freedom have been awarded to Americans who had made important contributions to their country. A few of these Americans were Civil Rights leader Rosa Parks, labor leader Cesar Chavez, Chief Justice Thurgood Marshall, and tennis player Arthur Ashe. More recently, medals have been awarded to Pope Paul II, chef Julia Child, and singer Aretha Franklin.

4     In 2002, President George Bush had a list of twelve people to honor at the ceremony in the East Room of the White House. One of these people was Bill Cosby.
