A Broken Heart
By Kathleen W. Redman

1     Have you ever heard anyone say any of these things?

            "Have a heart."
"He had a change of heart."
"She knew the poem by heart."
"It was his heartfelt wish to be a star."
"She made a mistake, but her heart was in the right place."
            "She cried her heart out."
            "He had a heavy heart."
"He had his heart set on winning the prize."
            "She had a broken heart."

2     Do you think the person really meant that his (or her) heart was broken? No, these are just ways to talk about strong emotions. If your heart was in the wrong place, that would be a problem. Having a broken heart would be a big problem!

3     The heart is one of the three parts of the circulatory system. It is about the size of your clenched fist. It is shaped like a fist, too. Inside the heart are four hollow chambers. Each chamber is a little pump. The pumping pushes blood all around your body.
