Antarctica
By Cindy Grigg

1     Antarctica is the fifth-largest continent. It is about one and one-half times larger than the United States. It lies at the South Pole. It is in the southern hemisphere. Most of the continent lies inside the Antarctic Circle, a line of latitude about 66 degrees south of the equator. It is surrounded by the Southern or the Antarctic Ocean.

2     Antarctica is unique among the continents. First, there are no countries there. The United States and many other countries send scientists to work there. But no country owns the land of Antarctica. There is no government there.

3     Because of the latitude, there are long periods of daylight when the southern hemisphere is having summer (December to March). In the wintertime (June to September), there are long periods of darkness.
