Moving Carla
By Mary Lynn Bushong

Carla sat at the kitchen table. Her father's announcement stunned her into silence.

"What do you mean -- we're going to move?" she finally gasped out the words.

"You know we've been talking about going back to the farm for some years now. Your grandfather is just not able to do the work anymore. He has been able to plant the crop, but now he may not be able to keep up with all the other work."

"Why can't Uncle Joe help him?" Carla complained. "He is a farmer."

"You know very well that Uncle Joe has a big enough farm of his own that he won't have time to help your grandfather," said Dad firmly. "Besides, you've often talked about how you'd like to live on the farm."

"I know," said Carla with a heavy sigh. "It's just that I never thought it would really happen. When do we move?"

"When is school out?" asked Dad.

"It's out in two more weeks," said Carla hesitantly.

"There's your answer, then," said Dad. "Better get busy on your homework."
