Summer in the City
By Mary Lynn Bushong

1
City streets in summer
Never cool but get hotter
Where there are no trees
The roads become a grill.

2
Open hydrants fill the air
With cooling drops of moisture
For a little while.
Then they are closed once more.

3
Shoppers hurry through the
Languid heat to reach awnings.
They spend too much money in stores,
Avoiding the sun's taunting glare.
