Where Did My Hamburger Go?
By Kathleen W. Redman

1     When you first smell food, your body starts getting ready to digest it! The wonderful smell of a hamburger, all juicy and ready to eat, causes your body to start making saliva. That is the first step of digestion.

2     Our food is fuel for our bodies. The nutrients in food give our cells the energy they need to operate. Before food can do that, it has to be in very small pieces. Then the body can absorb the pieces and use them.

3     We have a tube-type digestive system. Food goes in the mouth first. There it is chewed and mixed with saliva. Then it goes down the esophagus to the stomach.
