Scully the Guide Dog Helps Scott
By Colleen Messina

1     Scott likes to ride a bicycle. He enters races. He brings his dog to the races. This might not seem strange. However, Scott is blind. He brings Scully, his guide dog, with him.

2     Scott began to lose his sight when he was nineteen years old. Before he was blind, he loved to ride his bicycle. Once he could not see, he did not ride for years. His sister had an idea. She knew a man. He rode a tandem bicycle. This is a bicycle for two people. Scott met the man. They rode together. Later, they entered races. Scott's guide dog helped him get around. He could go to races. The dog helped Scott have confidence. Scott is happy he can ride again.

3     Guide dogs help many people. They receive a lot of training. This training starts when they are puppies. The Guide Dogs for the Blind organization trains some of the puppies. The puppies are born there. When the puppies are 8 or 9 weeks old, they go live with a puppy raiser. The puppy raiser keeps the puppy until it is between 13 and 18 months old.
