1     The Pilgrims met Squanto in the spring. He was an Indian. He spoke English! His story amazed them. He had crossed the ocean as a slave. He had learned to speak English. When he came back to this land, he was free. Squanto wanted to help the Pilgrims. He showed them how to plant corn. With his help, the Pilgrims learned how to catch eels and lobsters.
