Maria Montessori and Her Method
By Jennifer Kenny

1     Maria Montessori was born in Italy on August 31, 1870. She always seemed to be a girl ahead of her time. She went to a boys' school. She studied science and math. She was the first woman in Italy to receive a medical degree. She became a doctor in 1896.

2     Maria worked at a clinic. There she worked with special needs children. She decided that they could learn a lot more than even the experts thought.

3     In 1901, Maria became the director of a school for mental retardation. She gave the children activities that meant something. People noticed Maria's work when many of the children passed public school tests meant for sixth graders.
