Hearts and Flowers
By Kathleen W. Redman

All of the students in Mrs. Ricco's class were talking when Mr. Lockman walked through the door. Everyone seemed excited. Even Abby and Tyler were talking!

Mr. Lockman put down his briefcase and smiled at Mrs. Ricco. "What are they so excited about?" he asked.

"Oh, it's a secret," Mrs. Ricco said. "I'll let them tell you." She turned to the class. "Children," she said, "Mr. Lockman is here. Please sit down and we will tell him what we're all so happy about."

The children walked to their seats, still talking.

"So, what's up that's causing so much chatter?" Mr. Lockman asked.

The children giggled. Some of them rolled their eyes. Josie raised her hand. "I can tell you," she said. "Mr. Dell is my cousin. Do you know him?"

Mr. Lockman shook his head. "No, I don't think so. Is he a teacher?"

The children giggled again. Josie continued, "Yep, he sure is! He is the second grade teacher and most of us were in his class." Josie stopped talking and looked at Mr. Lockman. "And do you know what he's going to do?" she asked.

"No, I don't," Mr. Lockman said, "but it sounds like it must be very funny."

All the children giggled and looked at the tops of their desks.

"Oh, Mr. Lockman," Josie said, "my cousin is getting married!"

     The children giggled again.

"Why is that so funny?" Mr. Lockman asked.
