1 It was nearly two years until the election, but already the wheels were in motion to start the process of electing the next President of the United States. Since the current president, George Bush, had already served two terms, he was not eligible to run again. His vice president, Dick Cheney, chose not to run. This meant that it would be a wide open contest. No one had a clear advantage. Anyone could win.
