Queen Elizabeth, George Washington, Valley Forge, Revolutionary War |
1 Frozen fingers do not feel good. Gloves help. Mittens help, too. Gloves and mittens protect your hands in winter. In cold places, almost everyone wears them. Gloves and mittens are hand helpers.
2 Gloves have places for each finger. Some people call each spot a sheath. Gloves have five sheaths. Gloves have cousins called mittens. Mittens only have one sheath. The sheath on a mitten is for that special finger, the thumb. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Fingers against each other stay warmer!
3 Gloves keep hands warm, but they have other purposes. They can be used for dressing up. Queen Elizabeth I of England liked fancy gloves. She lived in the 16th century. Her pretty gloves had jewels on them! Gloves can also be used for practical reasons. Some sports require that players wear gloves. Doctors wear medical gloves for protection. Even astronauts need gloves. They wear strong gloves to work in space. Gloves have lots of uses besides keeping hands warm.
