Jamal's Journey
By Joyce Furstenau

1     "Happy birthday, Grandma," said Jamal. "We are coming to visit you today."

2     His grandmother was happy. She had not seen Jamal for a long time. It was a special day. It was her birthday.

3     Jamal's grandmother lived in another city. It would take several hours to get there. It was too far for Jamal to walk. It was too far to ride a bicycle. The bus did not stop there. Jamal and his mother had to drive to Grandmother's house in the car.

4     Jamal carried a neatly wrapped present to the car. His mother backed the car into the street. She drove several blocks. Soon, she came to an intersection with a red light. His mother stopped the car. The intersection was busy. There was a lot of traffic. A fancy purple truck pulled up beside them. Jamal looked up at the driver. The driver smiled. He waved at Jamal. He honked his horn. The horn was very loud. A taxi driver honked his horn, too. The taxi driver was in a hurry.
