Muir Woods National Monument
By Meg Leonard

1     Caption: Two people walking on a trail in Muir Woods National Monument.

2     Muir Woods is in California. It is a national monument for tree-lovers. It is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. There are many redwood trees here. You can hike on trails through the woods.

3     Muir Woods became a national monument about one hundred years ago. It is famous for its redwood or sequoia trees. These trees are the tallest living things on earth. They live in a forest. It is an old-growth forest. Old-growth forests have old, large live trees. They have three different layers. The layers are like a house. The bottom layer is like a carpet. The middle layer is like the furniture. The top layer is like the ceiling in a house. Dead trees are also a part of an old-growth forest. The living things in an old-growth forest depend on each other.
