1 Fifty years ago, life was very different in our southern states. White people and black people were kept apart. They did not sit together in buses or trains. Black and white children did not go to the same schools. Blacks and whites did not even drink from the same water fountains. That is called segregation. Many people did not like it. They wanted to change things. Their leader was Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King knew that segregation was wrong. It meant that people were treated better or worse just because of the color of their skin.![]() |
