1 Samuel Johnson was born in England in 1709. His family was poor. Samuel was often sick. Samuel's father owned a bookshop. Samuel loved to read! He liked to use words to express his feelings. After he grew up, he worked with books. He translated books from one language to another. He learned the meanings of many words. He knew how to use words well. A London publisher asked Samuel to write a book to help others learn about words. The book would list words. It would tell how to say them. It would explain what they meant.
