¹     The word "effigy" means an image of a person or animal. Effigy mounds are mounds of earth shaped like an animal. American Indians built effigy mounds many years ago. You can find some of these mounds at Effigy Mounds National Monument. It is in Iowa. The monument is on the banks of the Mississippi River.
 
²     Early American Indian tribes built effigy mounds over two thousand years ago. Most are found in four states. They are Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois. There are over 200 mounds at Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa. Some are in the shapes of birds or bears. There are also mounds that are shaped like cones. There are long mounds, too. The mounds rise into the air. The shape of the mound is seen best from above.
