Life with a Wallaby
By Colleen Messina

1     People enjoy their pets for many reasons. Dogs are loyal friends. Lizards are fascinating. Fish are beautiful to watch. Some people enjoy pets they can hug. Pet wallabies apparently love to cuddle.

2     There are many species of wallabies in the wild. They live in Australia. They also live in Tasmania and New Guinea. They are marsupials. The females have a pouch to carry their young. Wallabies have big feet, large hind legs, and a long tail. This long tail props them up. It helps them balance as they leap and bounce from place to place. Wallabies can be brown or gray. In the wild, they eat vegetation and grass.

3     Wallabies have become popular exotic pets. People who get wallabies have to be sure these animals are legal pets in their area. Potential wallaby owners should check with their city and county officials. A local humane society or veterinarian might be a good source of information. States also have rules about exotic pets.
