A Splinter
By Jennifer Kenny

1     Samantha wanted to baby-sit. She liked children. She thought it would be nice to earn some money. One Saturday afternoon she took a babysitting course at her local library. It taught her a lot about children and what to do in emergency situations.

2     Samantha paid special attention to the section on first aid. She knew any of that information might come in handy. One special part of the training caught her ear. It was about splinters. Why would that be important to Samantha? She knew her neighbors' yards had wooden swing sets. There would be plenty of splinters.

3     The trainer explained that a splinter was any thin material that gets just below the top layer of skin. A splinter could be made of wood, metal, glass, cactus, or thorn. She said it is always helpful to know what material the splinter is.
