Venture Smith
By Brenda B. Covert

1     A boy and his family lived on the west coast of Africa. His father was a prince. The young boy was a prince as well. An army invaded their land. The boy and his family were taken prisoner. The boy's father was killed. The boy was made a slave and brought to America. This happened around 1729. His owner named him Venture.

2     Venture worked in the master's house in Rhode Island. He grew up and married a slave named Meg. Once Venture tried to escape with some other slaves, but the plan fell apart. One day his master sold him to someone else. By the time he was 37 years old, he had had several masters.
