For the Good of the Earth
By Jody Williams

1     Many years ago people became aware that something was just not right with the Earth. They noticed the Earth was being hurt. Who was doing the hurting? People who called Earth their home. Many people were mad. They wanted to do something to save the Earth.

2     Senator Gaylord Nelson was one of those people. In 1969, he announced that he was going to do something about our planet. He organized a nationwide demonstration. Newspapers called his plan a national day of observance of environmental problems. It was called a "teach-in." Senator Nelson's goal was to inspire people to make sure the environment was healthy and would last a long time.
