1     James Monroe was the fifth president. He was born in Virginia. Four of the first five presidents were born in Virginia. He was a leader in the American Revolution. He fought in the army. He was the last president who fought in this war. Monroe was elected in 1816. He was president for eight years. The country changed when Monroe was president. More states wanted to join. Missouri wanted to become a state. This state allowed slavery. Maine wanted to become a state, too. It was a free state. This became known as the Missouri Compromise. It kept the number of slave states .....
