1 The fictional character Captain Hook used a shiny hook in place of one hand. Artificial limbs today are better than that. An artificial hand is called a prosthesis. One definition of prosthesis is "an artificial device used to replace a missing body part." Many people think of artificial limbs when they hear this term.
