1     Some doctors help people. Others help animals. Doctors that help animals are called vets. "Vet" is short for veterinarian. Animals go to the vet when they are sick. A vet can help to make them well. Helping a sick animal can be hard work. When you are sick, you can tell the doctor what hurts. But a sick animal cannot. They can't talk to their doctor. A vet must use clues to try and figure out what is wrong. The vet will study the animal. He or she may run some tests. Finally, the vet may give the animal some medicine. Sometimes a vet even has to perform surgery.

A vet will weigh the animal. He or she will also take its temperature. An animal check-up may also include shots. People do not like to get shots. Animals don't, either. But animals need immunizations just like people do. These shots help to keep the animals healthy. The shots protect them from certain diseases.

3     It is hard work to become a vet. .....
