1     Chester A. Arthur was our twenty-first president. He was born in Vermont in 1829. He was a schoolteacher. He was a lawyer. He practiced law in New York City. He won a case against segregation on streetcars in New York City. Segregation is when a group of people is left out because of their race or class. When Arthur won the case, it got rid of segregation on New York streetcars. Arthur served in the Customs House in New York. The Customs House kept track of goods coming into or going out of the country by boat. Arthur was a Republican. He gave jobs to other Republicans. This was known as the spoils system. President Hayes removed him from his job because .....
