The Autograph Hound
By Joyce Furstenau

1     The school year was coming to a close. Beth always had mixed emotions at the end of each school year. Her birthday was just a few days after school was out. That made her happy, but she wouldn't be able to see her friends all summer. That made her sad. She knew when school was out that it would be the last time she would see most of her friends until fall. That's why Beth always felt excited and yet a little bit sad before summer vacation started.

2     A few days before school was out, Beth got a shoebox-sized package in the mail. It was a birthday present from her grandmother who lived far away. Her grandmother always sent Beth a birthday card, but this year she sent Beth a gift.

3     "I think it's an early birthday present. When can I open it?" asked Beth.

4     "Right now," said her mother. "It says on the package 'Open Immediately.'"
