Carrie Chapman Catt: Founder of The League of Women Voters
By Joyce Furstenau

1     Carrie Chapman Catt was recognized as one of the most prominent female leaders of the 19th and early 20th century. She was a suffragette and the founder of the League of Women Voters.

2     Carrie Clinton Lane was born on January 9, 1859 in Ripon, Wisconsin. When she was seven years old, her parents moved to Charles City, Iowa, where Carrie attended school. When she graduated from high school, her father would not give her money to continue her education so she taught school for a year and saved her money. She enrolled in Iowa State Agricultural College in 1878 and spent two years there. She was only one of eighteen women to graduate from the college in 1880.

3     At that time, Carrie wanted to become a lawyer so she began teaching high school in Mason City, Iowa. She found she enjoyed teaching so much that she gave up on becoming a lawyer. Within two years she became principal and then superintendant of Mason City schools.
