Edward Everett Hale - A Boy's Life in New England
By Jane Runyon

1     Edward Everett Hale was born in 1822. His family was well-to-do. His father's name was Nathan Hale. No, he wasn't the patriot who gave up his life for his country during the Revolutionary War. That was his uncle. His mother's brother was Edward Everett, a famous speaker and statesman of the time. Many members of Edward's family were known throughout the state of Massachusetts.

2     Edward liked to say that there were two groups of children in his family. He was the youngest of the first four children. There were four years between him and the youngest four. There always seemed to be a nurse in the household to take care of the young ones. There was also a man servant named Fullum who was in charge of almost everything that had to do with keeping a good home.

3     Edward described his happy childhood in an autobiography written in 1893 called A New England Boyhood. The life he described was fun and full of love in his entire family. Many young men of the time would have gladly swapped places with Edward.
