Break It Down: Digestion

2     The foods that you eat must be broken down before your body can use them. Your body does this through a process called digestion. Digestion begins as soon as you put a bite of food in your mouth. You use your teeth to break your food into tiny pieces. Saliva, or spit, in your mouth mixes with the food as you chew. The saliva helps to break down food even more. Next, you swallow your food and it moves down a long tube called the esophagus and into your stomach.
