Orangutans
By Vickie Chao
Rewritten as a short reader by Cindy Grigg

1     Orangutans belong to the great ape family. They are related to chimpanzees and gorillas. They live only in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra in Southeast Asia. They are endangered animals.

2     Orangutans have long, reddish brown hair. A black-haired sub-group was found in 2009. Orangutans grow to four to five feet tall and weigh up to 250 pounds. Orangutans' arms are longer than their legs. They can touch the ground with their hands even when they are standing up. Their hands look just like our hands. Their feet look just like their hands. Orangutans can swing from one tree to another using both their hands and feet!

3     Orangutans spend most of their time in trees. They make nests of tree leaves to sleep in at night among the tree branches. When they do come down to the ground, they walk awkwardly. They are the largest animals that live in trees.
