Shaun White, Snowboarder
By Brenda B. Covert

1     It was 1998 when the Winter Olympic Games first welcomed snowboarding as an Olympic sport. Nagano, Japan hosted the Olympics that year. Shaun White was only 11 years old; that was too young to take part. He must have been excited to see the sport televised; after all, he had been snowboarding for five years! Two years later, at age 13, Shaun turned pro.

2     Shaun tried out for the 2002 U.S. Winter Olympic team. He was 15 years old. He came close, but he didn't make it. However, he did compete in the Winter X Games; he won two silver medals there.

3     Shaun White earned a spot on the 2006 U.S. Winter Olympic team at age 19. He traveled to Torino, Italy. There he won the gold medal in the men's halfpipe.
