Hawaiian Monk Seals

1 Hawaiian monk seals are found only near the islands of Hawaii and many small islands to the northwest. These seals live in warm, topical waters. Most other seals are at home in cold waters. Hawaiian monk seals, or HMS for short, are usually seen alone. A mother and her calf stay together for only about six weeks. When the monk seal baby is born, it may weigh from twenty-five to thirty pounds. During its first six weeks, its only food is milk from its mother. At the end of those six weeks, the baby will weigh about two hundred pounds! The mother seal does not eat during this .....
