Galapagos Giant Tortoises

1     A Galapagos giant tortoise with a domed shell
 
2     Galapagos tortoises are the world's largest tortoise species. Tortoises are turtles that live on land. Galapagos tortoises measure up to four feet long. They may weigh as much as seven hundred pounds. Galapagos tortoises live on the Galapagos Islands. These islands are about six hundred miles west of South America's country of Ecuador. Galapagos giant tortoises have huge upper shells that look like either domes or saddle backs. The type of shell they have is caused by their diet. The tortoises with domed shells live on the wetter islands. Their main food is grasses that grow low to the ground. Tortoises living on drier islands eat taller shrubs and cactuses. They need to have shells that let them reach high for food. Galapagos giant tortoises .....
