1 Grace Goodhue was born in Vermont in 1879. She was an only child. Grace had a zest for life. She was very friendly and happy. When Grace was young, she learned of a school for the deaf. She decided that she wanted to work there some day. She did. There Grace met Calvin Coolidge. They were married in October 1905. Calvin was very quiet and shy. Grace's personality complemented his. Calvin and Grace had two sons. Their younger son died when he was only 16. Calvin became involved in politics. He did not ask Grace's opinion on politics. Grace took care of the house and family. She was always well dressed. She loved bright colors and animals. Calvin Coolidge was vice president under President Harding. Harding died during his term. Calvin became the new president. As first lady, Grace did not get involved in many issues. She did support the Red Cross. Grace was the first first lady to get Congress to approve a bill to protect items .....![]() |
