How Infrared Works

2     Infrared radiation is part of the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum. The spectrum includes many kinds of energy. EM energy travels in waves. White light and colored light are the only types of EM energy that humans can see. They make up just a tiny piece of the EM spectrum. White light is all colors of light combined.
 
3     The waves of energy that make the color purple or violet are the shortest EM waves that people can see. The waves that make red are the longest that people can see. The other colors are in between red and violet. Beyond red is infrared with waves even longer than red's waves. Beyond violet is ultraviolet, which is also invisible to people.
