1 Edith Carow was born in 1861 in Connecticut. She was a friend of Theodore Roosevelt as a child. Edith was a quiet girl who loved books. Edith and Theodore's friendship changed when he went away to college. Some say he asked her to marry him. Whatever happened, they did not get married at that time. Edith was at the wedding of Theodore to Alice Lee. Alice died a few years later. Edith and Theodore began talking again. They married in 1886. Edith and Theodore had five children. Edith believed that her job was to be a wife and mother. She had a strong character. She took efficient care of her family. Theodore became president in 1901. He was vice president when President McKinley was shot. .....
