1 Each year many holidays are celebrated in America. One occurs each autumn. It is tucked between Halloween and many winter celebrations. It is a day for giving thanks. It is a day for feasting. It is also a day for football and parades. This day is Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a national holiday. People living in cities and towns all over America enjoy this special day. It is held on the fourth Thursday of November. But it has not always been a national holiday. Over the years many leaders have encouraged Americans to give thanks. They have asked people to count their blessings. In 1789 George Washington declared the fourth Thursday of November to be a day of "thanksgiving and prayer."
