Fire Safety at Home

1     The smell of sawdust hung in the air. The fragrant odor of cedar and oak as well as pine and mahogany clung to every corner of the basement workshop. Kevin heard the whine of the motor as his father cut a piece of wood with the table saw.
 
2     "Hey, buddy, how are you doing?" asked Kevin's father as he turned off the table saw.
 
3     "I'm doing fine," said Kevin. "What are you making?"
 
4     "I'm making a new door for one of the kitchen cabinets. Could you hand me my tape measure over there, please?" asked Dad as he laid the piece of wood he had just cut onto the work bench. "You look like you have something on your mind. Is everything okay?"
 
5     "Well, we had a captain with the fire department speak to our class this week. He taught us how to help prevent fires in our homes," Kevin said as he pulled a stool up to the work bench and sat down. "So I have been looking around the house to see how we measure up."
 
6     "And what have you found?" asked Dad.
 
7     "I thought we were in pretty good shape at first, but then I did some reading and learned that there is more we can do to be safe," said Kevin.
 
8     "What do you suggest?"
