Secretary of Education
By Meg Leonard |
|
1 The Department of Education was once a part of another department. It used to be with the Department of Health and Human Services. In 1979, President Carter signed an act to create a separate department for education. It combined offices from several federal agencies. The Department of Education is a cabinet level position. It is part of our executive branch. The head of the department is called the Secretary of Education. He or she gives the president advice on all matters dealing with education. Since its creation, there has been talk of getting rid of this department. Some feel that education should be left to local and state governments. For now, it remains a department in the federal government.
