1     The United Nations (U.N.) is a worldwide organization. It was founded by fifty-one countries after the end of World War II. It is committed to maintaining global peace and security. It strives to do this by developing friendly relations among nations. It promotes social progress, better living standards, and human rights.
 
2     The United States is one of 192 member states of the U.N. The leader of the U.S. delegation to the U.N. is called the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Another name for this position is the U.S. Permanent Representative to the U.N. He or she represents the United States on the U.N. Security Council, except in the rare situation when a more senior officer of the United States is present. This could include the secretary of state or president.
